GALUPPI, PIANO SONATAS
... Listening to Galuppi's keyboard pages reserves many surprises: the most striking concerns the ability to produce
melodies of unheard-of sweetness but veiled by a sense of melancholy capable of unexpectedly transforming into disturbance
of the soul. The slow movements, almost invariably placed at the opening of the sonata, are appreciated for their singability
and it is not uncommon for the listener to recall similarities with operatic arias. In rapid times dominates an expressive
and never overtly external virtuosity, supported by a refined technical mastery. The choice of compositions in this anthology
allows us to listen to pages of a certain archaic flavour, in which Scarlatti's and Bach's experience appears evident, and
to reach scores which already allow us to glimpse the nascent romantic ferment.

Aristocratic, elegant, precious, light is the touch of Baldassarre Galuppi on the piano. Born in Burano in the 18th century,
they called him Buranello ... He was among the most productive in his time, and one of the most forgotten afterwards. A firm
point to oblivion now comes from the recovery of eight of his piano sonatas, which Andrea Bacchetti plays with rare beauty.
And dedication, to recreating a distant world, made of perfect sounds, still free from formal duties and devoted only to the
pleasure of enchantment. If the Neapolitan school invented color, this Venetian one - still to be recovered - distilled the
concept into magic music in oriental alembics.

... Galuppi has left a rather rich production for keyboard and not without elements of interest. You can have direct evidence of
this by listening to the recent CD produced by Sony BMG and performed by Andrea Bacchetti. It contains eight sonatas which, in an
apparent expository simplicity, appear rich in expressive solutions, with slow movements of undoubted elegance and clear theatrical
ancestry, but also with bright and pleasant allegro. Bacchetti, 31 years old from Genoa, is an "anomalous" pianist, who
prefers periods less frequented by his colleagues to the great romantic repertoire: «I love baroque and pre-classicism, I have

... Even in his long militancy on Bach's music, Bacchetti never tried to make the piano look like a harpsichord, to reproduce the
phrasing and dynamics of ancient instruments on the modern keyboard. His remains an eighteenth century filtered by the sensitivity
of a pianist, viewed through the magnifying glass of an instrument of our days, in this case a Fazioli grand piano. Then recourse
to the pedal, even if used with extreme measure, phrasing in long spans, frequent use of the legato. ... With Bacchetti, Galuppi's
keyboard music, relegated to minor things or at the limit to eighteenth-century curiosities, seems to acquire a new life. There is
not only virtuosity of sound volume, leaps, octaves, speed, there is also virtuosity of touch, virtuosity of phrasing and subtle
timbre variations. And sometimes this second kind of virtuosity is much more important than the first.

This recording grabs you from the very first note: Rarely does a piano CD sound so natural, so faithful to the sound, so
clearly drawn and perfectly balanced in terms of dynamics... Bacchetti allows this precious, at times almost fragile music to
unfold calmly, evenly and without exaltation. His playing fascinates with a natural matter of course, he seems to breathe with
the music (or with the instrument) and unabashedly lets the piano be a (modern) piano, with a full but never obtrusive sound.
«Romantic» In these interpretations, sensitivity is paired with an almost poetic intimacy. The musical events unfold
naturally in every measure - these sonatas speak for themselves, and that is great praise for the performer.

After listening to the album, there is nothing left but to applaud Bacchetti, because he achieves a sound of astonishing
expressive effectiveness that is essentially baroque, reaching a perfect and difficult balance between the emotional and the
rational. The interpretation is loaded with good intentions from the beginning, and already in the delicious Sonata in G Major
it is appreciated that everything has a meaning, and that the music flows coherently towards where the pianist wants. As we
continue listening, the magnificent resolution of the ornaments, often improvised on the fly, in the purest style of the time,
draws our attention. We also see how Bacchetti takes advantage of the modern piano to adapt perfectly, on the one hand, to the
cantabile of the gallant style of these pieces, and on the other to the dance forms, through a varied articulation. Technically,
he is not far behind either... If we add that the sound recording is of the highest quality, the conclusion is obvious: the
album is undoubtedly worth it and the recommendation is necessary

successions of delicate trills held firmly in place by Bacchetti's measured playing.

The pianist Andrea Bacchetti (1977) rediscovers Baldassarre Galuppi for us... he delves into them from a serene attitude that is
vital at the same time in what are versions that are brimming with sanity and an imperturbability typical of one who knows and breathes

to "feel" the works. From Bacchetti one perceives clarity and great sensitivity with the keyboard, his touch is meticulous
and he creates different gradations in his phrasing that have the virtue of emulating the Italian art of singing. His way of savoring
each phrase is conscientious and extremely detailed, as is his expression, which overflows with joy and vitality. The pianist's sound
is wrapped in a halo of sincere mysticism, the one that leaves behind the unnecessary and goes straight to the essence. In short, some
personal interpretations that, in addition to being excellent, are already presented as referential

inmediato atractivo ...
Galuppi's sonatas are mostly made up of two movements: the first, of a markedly lyrical nature, precedes another of a more
rhythmic and virtuosic nature. The Italian pianist masters both facets with good taste and skill. Instead of giving in to the
temptation of excessively lightening his piano and "disguising" it as a harpsichord, Bacchetti seeks a depth in the
phrasing and instrumental timbre that, without overloading the discourse with excessive seriousness, immediately enhances this
exquisite music. attractive

There are few musicians for whom it feels like saying: «He's a poet». It takes an enchanted way of talking, a proposal
of beauty without justification, the rapture at hand. Baldassarre Galuppi belongs to these privileged ones ... Famous in his time,
in the Venetian eighteenth century, rediscovered in bits and pieces in our age, he hides under his frivolous elegance and lagoon
softness illuminating revelations, intimate but wonderful harmonic openings. Andrea Bacchetti, a young Genoese of different
temperaments, sharp and lucid in the clarity of his reasons, presents a handful of piano sonatas: he begins dry and a little serious,
with very pronounced trills, as if he wanted to mimic the harpsichord, then seems to go discovering. When he gets to the Sonata in
E flat we go back to play to listen again.

phantasievollen Tonsprache Galuppis versonnen nachzulauschen.
Under the hands of the Italian pianist Andrea Bacchetti, the eight sonatas show above all that Vivaldi's contemporary has already
left the baroque age well behind... Without much fuss about his exemplary technique, elegant tone shaping or his admirable non-legato
playing Bacchetti seems to be listening pensively to Galuppi's imaginative tonal language on a very warm-sounding Fazioli. What's more,
his playing gives the impression that he has completely internalized the pulse of this music... Bacchetti displays excellent stylistic
sensitivity. His way of playing reminds one of that of a harpsichordist, even in the intimate opening movements, whose evenness he
takes away from any casualness with fine dynamic gradations and carefully chosen phrasing. For this reason alone, this recording makes

At first glance there is much here to draw the interest of the curious music-lover. Bacchetti is a fine keyboard-player with a
keen interest in uncovering lesser-known music, and his DVD of the Goldberg Variations proves he's no slouch with the canon either.
This recording on RCA (coming two years after a disc featuring rarely heard sonatas of Cherubini) sports fine playing, superb
recorded sound and informative notes by Mario Marcarini ...

... Bacchetti is an excellent pianist but also an intelligent interpreter, as he starts from the sources, choosing, with the
musicologist Mario Marcarini, a varied anthology of Sonates, from those more linked to the Baroque world to those closer to the
new romantic ferment. The execution of the 8 Sonatas is treated in the smallest executive details, in the phrasing and in the
embellishments, also adding small improvisations that the pianist delivers to us with a refined taste and in style. Andrea Bacchetti
is an interpreter who places the text and the musical sense of what he plays even before his personality; this means that the work
performed responds to the author's time and thought, but filtered through the musicality and refinement of a great pianist ...

This is an absolutely outstanding CD from every point of view and will surely come as a revelation to many ... the quality
of Galuppi's invention is admirable, and we must be grateful to the young Italian pianist Andrea Bacchetti for recording
such a welcome collection of Sonatas as are contained on this record ... Bacchetti's performances are exemplary; he possesses
a finished technique allied to a mastery of phrasing and tonal colouration that mark him out as an artist of the front rank
in music of this period. The recording quality is very fine and the documentation is first-class. All in all, a record of
considerable musical interest and notable achievement, which deserves to be taken very seriously indeed ...

this music seems to tempt pianists even more, as shown by this selection published by RCA and starring Andrea Bacchetti, a
singular artist who in a quixotic way seems to want to base his career on a repertoire lost to the piano cause, often aggravated
by his limited technical difficulty (we think of Bach's Inventions or Cherubini Sonatas, apart from this Galuppi). Thus, Bacchetti
links his Galuppi directly with that of the maestro Benedetti Michelangeli, by focusing on the cantability, the timbre smoothness,
as well as the timeless hypnotic sense of these peculiar works, achieving a register as extemporaneous as he could achieve

... the Sonatas here are of high quality. They are almost always in two movements, usually slow then fast, and playing together
for about nine or ten minutes ... Galuppi's invention is delightful and by no means stereotyped and his music is fully worthy
of a modern piano. Bacchetti brings each work to life with his pellucid articulation and always charms the ear. He is very well
recorded too. A disc not to be missed ...

Baldassarre Galuppi, known as «Buranello» is known for his production dedicated to melodrama, but here Andrea Bacchetti
presents us with a series of «Sonatas for keyboard» which among other things are based on a new edition edited by Andrea
Bacchetti himself and by Mario Marcarini. It consists of eight Sonatas, the first of which consists of a single movement, an Allegro
in G major «Pupille amate», while the other pieces are in bipartite form. It is a first contribution to the rediscovery
of a wide repertoire which unfortunately the world of music publishing has not yet dealt with sufficiently.
